The theme of depression is present throughout the entire book, especially in the case of Clara. While this theme is not the most impressive one, it is impressive that depression seems almost like a driving fore for everyone. In fact, it seems that many of the characters desire depression. It is obvious that depression is desired by Clara when she says one page 215 “By a perverse constitution of mind, he was considered as my greatest enemy who sought to withdraw me from a scene which supplied eternal food to my melancholy, and kept my despair from languishing.” Here Clara makes the allusion that depression and despair are a type of sustenance that she thrives on. By looking at the story through this lens it can be deduced that Carwin is the answer to Clara’s prayers. Carwin introduces mystery and tragedy in large quantity and can be seen as the ultimate driving force for Clara. Not only did Clara initiate the driving force behind Carwin’s long lasting influence on the group, but she also had the most drive to keep him around. Even though she did not entirely know that he was the one that was causing all of the problems, in some small way it can be said that she brought all of the tragedy to fruition through a twisted sense of self deprivation. These disastrous happenings are the one thing that Clara can count on to excite something inside of her. On page 217 she gives an example of this by saying that “the monotonous and gloomy series of my thoughts was broken” by yet another catastrophe. She needs disasters in her life in order to feel alive.
